A 5 MINUTE DOCUMENTARY, SBS ON DEMAND

Available to stream on SBS on Demand in 2023

THEY SKATE is a character-driven documentary that follows Dani Southcombe, a non-male, queer & neurodiverse skateboarder's journey to a Camp Skateboarding meet. Through their experience travelling as a minority within society, they reflect on the importance of this small skate community in providing a safe space in their lives.

Camp Skateboarding was founded in 2019 to bring a collective group of diverse queer individuals together who share a passion for skateboarding. For Dani Southcombe, a non-binary, neurodiverse sculptor living on Gadigal land in Sydney, this community is vital and one of the few places where they can feel safe, seen and accepted. As they get ready for their skate session, Dani recounts the role of the skate community in their life. They reflect on their complex journey of discovering their identity and sexuality, and how the community assisted them to find self-acceptance and a sense of belonging in society. THEY SKATE provides insight into the inclusivity of the Australian skateboarding subculture, through the power of collective belonging in community groups like Camp Skateboarding. It follows Dani’s journey as they navigate their way through the afternoon as a queer, neurodiverse individual who has found a sense of belonging in the male-dominated masculine sport.
